Anita Ward , singer is best-known for her 1979 disco song "Ring My Bell", which was a top 10 hit in the U.S.
Ward was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 20, 1957. She began to enjoy music, especially gospel, at an early age. Ward sang with Rust College's A Cappella Choir, where she recorded with Leontyne Price, a renowned Metropolitan Opera singer. She also recorded an obscure album with her gospel quartet. Ward decided not to pursue a career as a musician after graduation and became a substitute teacher for the Memphis elementary schools. Ward soon realized that music was too important a part her life and her manager connected her with Frederick Knight, a singer/songwriter who had a significant hit in 1972 with "I've been Lonely for so Long". Knight was asked to produce a demo of Ward's songs. But Knight soon fell in love with Ward's singing abilities and the sessions produced an entire album.
Songs of Love. After reviewing what they had recorded, they both agreed that there was still one song missing. Knight found an old song titled "Ring My Bell" which he had written for Stacy Lattisaw, a younger singer who would go on to have several hits in the '80s. Ward wasn't enthusiastic about the song's original lyrics, which featured teens talking on the phone. Knight did a quick lyrical overhaul of the song. She agreed to record the song, Knight providing most of her musical accompaniment. "Ring My Bell", which was recorded over two days, turned out to the be the most popular track. This resulted was Ward's 1979 debut album Songs of Love. It was also recorded by the Juana label, which is affiliated with T.K. "Ring My Bell", which was released in 1979, quickly reached the top of the charts. It reached the top of Billboard's Hot 100 that summer and remained there for five months. The second single, "Don't Drop My Love", was taken from Sweet Surrender's easy-to-follow album Sweet Surrender. It peaked at number 87. A few songs were recorded in sessions for a third album that was never finished. These songs were included in various Ward anthologies that were published over the next decades. Ward never recorded -- she only released one in 2011 -- but she performed into the 2010s.
